Customer Reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: Writers take note!!!! Absolutely brilliant!!! Comment: Absolutely brilliant on multiple levels of artistic excellence! A wonderful and compelling addition to an already radiant series.
My highest recommendation! Customer Rating: Summary: "The Bat Signal?! GET OVER HERE!!" Comment: Allright, now I know critics play games for a living and tend to see a slew of games in every category, but this is a review that I actually highly disagree with. I'm enjoying this game quite a bit and I haven't seen anything wrong with it yet. All the characters play and behave the way they should. The voice acting is surprisingly fairly impressive. All the heroes from DC have special moves that compliment their abilities. Even the DC characters such as The Joker and Lex Luthor who don't really have true powers or strengths were given special moves that suited them.
The gameplay itself is basically an enhanced, upgraded version of the 3D MK games from the previous generation. The tweaks and improvements to the gameplay are all for the better this time around. They scrapped the style-switching based combat and integrated a new system called "Klose Kombat". Pressing R1 makes your character grab the opponent and pull him in closer towards where you then press any of the face buttons in sequence, while your opponent has to attempt to match the button you choose in order to block the devastating combo. There's also Freefall Kombat which applies the same concept while falling through the air after you throw your enemy off of a multi-tiered stage. Another new gameplay element such as these is "Test Your Might", where you repeatedly slam your opponent through either the walls or ceilings of a multiple story arena. Once again you must use the new throw manuver allocated to L1 and then you and your opponent simply mash the face buttons as fast as you possibly can in a tug-of-war type struggle. These new gameplay features blend perfectly with the rest of the combat, and the combo system is still fairly deep.
The storyline itself isn't the worst one out there, and makes sense for both universes. I never followed DC that well, but the Superman and Batman characters seem to be portrayed rather faithfully.
The Kollector's Edition comes with the box that displays the unique cover art, a Blu-Ray that includes a digital comic along with a substantial amount of video footage, and the physical comic itself. Probably worth the extra 10 bucks if you're a comic enthusiast.
Overall this game exceeded all expectations I ever had for it. The core gameplay is fun and addictive. All of the characters have a unique feel to them, and they even put a lot of depth into their personalities. This is definitely a game that I will play through countless times online or with friends, and that's after I complete the story mode and the Kombo Challenges. Taking that into consideration, this game has a high amount of replay value. I predict that this game will end up being the sleeper hit of this season.
9.3 Presentation
Menus are simple and easy to follow. The story mode has a somewhat interesting plotline for DC or MK fans.
9.8 Graphics
Absolutely superb. All DC characters look true to their comic roots, and the MK roster has been boldly reinvented. A stunning level of detail is apparent with a smooth framerate at all times.
9.5 Sound
Sound is pretty much top-notch. The voice acting is somewhat impressive. The Joker is hysterical.
10.0 Gameplay
Incredibly addictive, and extremely intuitive. The block, 3D step and Rage mode adds a lot. This might be the greatest Mortal Kombat ever made.
10.0 Lasting Appeal
A Story mode for both universes, multiple difficulties, Kombo Challenges, online/local versus play, and trophies to unlock give this game virtually infinite replay value. Customer Rating: Summary: Considerably Good Comment: Well,
Since I havent bought a MK game since MK II back on SNES, I figured I'd give this one a shot. (I heard it was the last of the MK series)
The gameplay mechanics feel a lot like the tekken engine which is a nice change.
Story: Sorta lame but, it does get you a couple trophies for the PS3 or achievements (360). You have to at LEAST play through it once just to understand whats going on here with MK vs DC. It explains why both worlds clashed.
Gameplay: I like the new Klose Kombat and Free Fall Mode, it kinda evens the playing field a bit. Its intuitive and original. The flow of fighting is quite smooth and the collision detection is pretty meaty (the hits land quite deep and one can feel the connection). Everyone has some sort of escape move or projectile at their disposal. The overall feel of MK vs DC is pretty balanced. Certain characters have their cheap moves though(superman/captain marvel). Combos are fairly easy to pull of unless you're doing some of the Kombo Challenges. That is, at times, hard to do.
Online matches are great; there might be some slight connection issues but, it seems like its been resolved. The lobby matches also get you achive/trophies.
Overall its a decent ride and a great addition to a typical fighters collection. The special edition is neat, including for us a piece of artwork on canvas and some bonus features. I've been a MK fan for quite some time, although not owning any previous titles since MK II, this is def a solid buy. Theres a bit to finish in this game and if you're daring enough, you'll try your skills online...
overall 3/5 Customer Rating: Summary: Finally, Mortal Kombat is fun again Comment: I loved Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3. It was pretty easy to pick up a character's move in those games and the learning curve was bearable. However, I avoided all Mortal Kombats following MK3. They were just too hard and I wasn't interested in memorizing all the combos.
Then MK vs DC comes along like a breath of fresh air. The controls just make sense on the dual shock. I'm able to try a new character and have all the basics down after a few fights.
The main point I want to convey is, that the learning curve has declined significantly from previous Mortal Kombats, and is on par with the curve from MK 1, 2 and 3. And, its a blast to play with the DC characters. I personally enjoy the Joker the most.
I'd personally recommend playing this on the PS3 over the 360 just because of the dual shock. I have a 360 but that controller just doesn't feel right for this game as I personally feel it's best for first person shooters and the like. Just my two cents.
The kollector's edition is nice but nothing to gawk at. Unless you find it less than MSRP, just get the regular edition. Customer Rating: Summary: Love it! Comment: Best concept in years. I'm enjoying every second of this game.
