The Queen is Back! Legendary singer songwriter Donna Summer is back with her first studio album in 17 years. In the thirty plus years that Donna Summer has been making music she has never confined her artistry to just one genre. Although Donna is, and will always be, "The Queen Of Disco" to many fans, her hits have spanned multiple musical genres from Rock to R&B to Inspirational and of course, Dance.

Summer helped to define the 70's pop music generation and Crayons has all the characteristics that made Donna an icon. Containing a potent mix of the up-tempo tunes and ballads, the new album showcases incredible new material that is written by Donna (who wrote or co-wrote the majority of her hits of the 70's and 80's). Working with Donna were renowned writers and producers including: Greg Kurstin (Lilly Allen, Pink), Danielle Brisebois (Natasha Bedingfield, New Radicals), JR Rotem (Sean Kingston, Rihanna), Evan Bogart (co-writer of Rihanna's smash "SOS" and the son of legendary record executive, Casablanca Records founder and Donna's mentor, Neil Bogart), and Lester Mendez (Shakira, Santana).

Comment: First of all let me start by saying I have always been a huge Donna Summer fan. I was very disappointed when Donna Summer's version of "Time to Say Goodbye"... "I Will Go with You (Con Te Partiró)" didn't chart. It is one of my all time favorite songs by her and she was in exceptioally fine voice. Her holiday collection "Christmas Spirit" is one of the best holiday releases in recent years. So I had great expectations for this release.

This release is so contrived. It is meant to appeal to a younger generation and it comes off as "chessy". I saw her on American Idol this past season. She didn't look like the Donna Summer I remembered from the "VH-1 Presents: Live & More Encore!", nor did she look comfortable on stage. The album cover for Crayons should be your first warning. The photo looks like Donna Summer 30 years ago. It's obviously an airbrushed photo. Donna Summer is still a beautiful woman, albeit a woman who will be 60 years old this December.

The songs on this disc are some of the worst songs I've ever heard. As an artists ages, they sometime (and rightfully so) need to make consessions. Donna Summer would have fit more comfortably into the vein of young contemporaries like Dido. She should have been allowed to construct beautiful "pop/dance pop" songs which would suit her voice... one of the best voices in pop music, still, today. Unfortunately, she's trying to be the Queen of Hip-Hop-esque pop... it's unfortunate.

I recently read an article speaking to the fact that she was never comfortable being cast as "the first lady of love". This disc has a similar feeling, in that it appears that she is being cast into these awful contemporary dance numbers where she doesn't belong. I so would have loved to have heard a cd that showcases one of my favorite voices... hopefully I won't have to wait another 9 years.

Summary: Donna has always been contemporary
Comment: I have been a fan of Donna Summer since 1978. I have enjoyed her period of super stardom, and I have endured her descent from the charts due to radio not continuing to play her music due to her disco stigma. I have always looked forward to a new Donna Summer album, and I have never been let down. From her years at Geffen records in the 80's to floundering between labels in the 90's she has continued to put out music that was relevant and current. She never felt he need to redo Bad Girls, or make a carbon copy of Last Dance. I cannot understand the confusion around her latest release, Crayons. The notion that she is trying to sound like a teeny bopper are insane. She is doing nothing different than she always does...make a current dance album that is true to herself. The only difference is its been 17 years since the last one. If you purchase this CD, you will not be let down. From start to finish it is a true classic, and very enjoyable. If you pine for the 70's, pick up one of her various greatest hits collections....If you want to hear some great contemporary dance music and ballads...buy this. You wont be dissapointed.

Summary: We waited all this time, for this?
Comment: What a bummer of a CD. There isnt anything over the top, or memorable about the songs on this release. Why wasn't "I got your love" included on this release? "I'm a fire" is way too long, and "Stamp your feet" only makes you want to stamp your feet in disgust. Skip this one.
