Editorial Review:
Almost 90% of mankind has been killed off following a devastating meteor strike that has caused a massive dust cloud to blot out the sun. Scattered survivors pick through the wreckage, and the remnants of several military superpowers patrol the ravaged landscape, some factions protecting the innocent while the others prey upon them. The two rival world superpowers, Rubinelle and Lazuria, continue to fight among the ruins of their countries, the few surviving military leaders of each side carrying on the conflict begun before the catastrophe. In their wake, various warlords rise to power, seizing scarce food rations from the defenseless survivors and attempting to assert their dominance in the absence of law and order. Follow the Rubinelle COs Will, Brenner, and Lin as they embark on a mission to rescue as many of the survivors as possible, with the help of the mysterious Isabella, an amnesiac girl who seems to know vital military secrets, and various other sympathetic factions.

Summary: Best Advance Wars yet
Comment: Faster gameplay, smarter enemy AI, and a more mature story make this the best Advance Wars yet.

The changes to the unit rooster make more tactics viable, and agressive tactics are more important than ever. These changes freshen up the gameplay and provide fresh challenges even for players of all of the previous Advance Wars games.

Summary: Advance Wars: Days of Ruin......
Comment: I'm one of those people who've never played Advance Wars before. The reason being is I didn't think tactical warfare strategy rpgs would interest me all that much. How I came across the game was I was looking for me a new game to play round Christmastime(as I was buyng myself a christmas present, lol). Most of the new games I wanted costed upwards of $40 at certain game shops so I looked for something more affordable. I didn't see anything that interested me except for this new Advance Wars game so I took a chance, like always, and bought the game. Now, I'm hopelessly addicted to the game. For those of you who don't know what Advance Wars is about, let me explain the game to you. Players are given command of an army of soldiers and take turns sending them into battle across maps. There are ground, air, and water units to which you must use strategy to pit them against the right units in battle. Defeat the right units and you move on to the next map and chapter of the story. The story itself is about a guy named Will who works his way out of rubble and finds that his world is in ruins because meteors hit the earth. Will is soon rescued by Captain Brenner and his group in search of other survivors. That's where things get interesting. To my understanding, Intelligent Systems changed things up quite a bit with this game of Advance Wars. Gone is the cutesy anime artistic style of the games of yesterday and in with a new more gritty realistic style. Gone are several of the vehicles from previous games and in are new vehicles like the anti-tank, the duster and the seaplane. Some vehicles can now be used to build units and structures, as well. Players will encounter several new types of terrain as they make their way across the devasted earth. I also hear that the ability to select different Commanding Officers during battle has been removed. While I've never played any of the previous games, this isn't too much of a problem with me. This is a more grownup Advance Wars although not too grownup that the younger set that enjoyed the previous games can't enjoy this one. Personally, I'd love to see Intelligent Systems push this new darker toned AW in their next game as I really love AW: Days of Ruin. So much so, I aim on rounding up their previous games in the meantime.

Even if you're like me and not the tactical warfare strategy rpg type, give this game a shot. You'll definitely love playing it. I guarantee it!!!

Summary: awesome game
Comment: Such a fun strategy game. Not a game I would buy for younger kids but I'd say ages 12 and up would love this game. The storyline is really fun as well. Takes a little while to get a good grasp of how to play, but once you get down the basics its super addicting!!! :)

Summary: Excellent addition to the Advance Wars library
Comment: I love when people take risks. Advance Wars has done that with both iterations for the DS. It was quite a leap to completely remove the story from the past 3 games and also go with a completely different tone. This game is not the upbeat, happy-go-lucky joyride of the past 3. Instead it creates a world that is bleak and desolate, starting the game off after a meteor shower has killed off most of the world's population. Now it is not just a struggle against an opponent, but also one of survival. I thoroughly enjoyed this setting, though I must say, not quite as much as the quirkiness of the past few games. Perhaps with a bit better writing it would have been fantastic, but it is still a solid story nonetheless.

This game also completely rebalances the units, bringing in different costs, changing abilities on some, removing others, and adding in new ones. This creates a greater balance so that just using 4 or 5 different units isn't always a great strategy. Along with the unit rebalance, the COs get a complete makeover in their capabilities. Gone are the overpowering abilities and in their place stands only one CO power per CO. The meter is now the same for all COs and you no longer build it faster, or at all, by taking damage. Each unit now counts the same and destroying 5 health to any unit raises your meter a bar. This is not global though, as the day-to-day abilities are not either. Each CO gets a zone around the unit you decide to put your CO in. Only the units within this zone get the added benefits, as well as your CO led unit getting a real nice boost. This zone will then grow up to two more squares in radius as you level up. This brings a great strategy into play. You can then choose to use your CO power and lose your greater zone, or not use it and keep your increased zone to effect more units.

After all is said and done, I don't think this game is as great as Dual Strike. It doesn't have the great war room anymore, though there are some maps you can play even though you don't get any rating on them. The greatest addition though is the wifi play, allowing you play anyone else around the world. Unfortunately, it is a bit limited in its design, but fun all the same. For some, this is a better game than its predecessors, yet for others, it is a very good game that could have used just a little more. In the end, if you enjoy strategy games, this really is a must buy.
