Summary: Expensive Form of Active Ingredient Diphenhydramine
Comment: Because this product has the Sominex brand name, it is much more costly than getting and equally-potent generic sleeping aid. Sominex has diphenhydramine (the active ingredient in Benadryl), which causes sedation (lasts about 8-12 hours) and thus acts like a good sleeping pill. Diphenhydramine is an anti-histamine, so it work for itching and allergies too. The main draw-back to any product with diphenhydramine is the morning hang-over you will have until your body metabolizes all the active ingredient. It may also cause urinary retention, dry mouth, and gait instability.

If you just need a cheap sleeping aid, there are generic diphenhydramine products available for sleep. Be aware that every medication has side effects, and so does diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine often causes bladder/urintary tract discomfort in men with prostatitis. Do not take this product if you have prostatitis, as it will increase your pain.
