Summary: No problems at all, perfectly packaged!
Comment: This hard drive worked out perfectly for my Netgear RND2150 ReadyNAS Duo 500 GB Desktop Network Attached Storage. You will need to buy some mounting screws though to install it in the ReadyNAS Duo. It was easy to install and works perfectly.

The packaging was also excellent. It came in an anti-static bag and lodged between two custom plastic pieces to keep it from moving around in the box.

Summary: Decent large capacity hard drive at a good price point
Comment: At the moment 500GB - 1 TB drives are selling at very good prices. I tend to buy Seagates due to their 5 year warranties though I've never had to take advantage of it.

I've purchased 30-40 HDs in the past for my PCs and friends PC's which I helped put together and I've never had any serious problems with any of the brands including Maxtor, Fujitsu, Quantum, WD, Hitachi and Seagate. Theres always been a group of people who rabidly bash one brand or another, including Seagate. Probably the brand most often mentioned is Maxtor, but I've never had any big problems with any of them. Maxtor is now owned by Seagate so even if you didnt like them in the past, they may be different now though, like I mentioned --- I've never had problems with them even in the pre-Seagate takeover, days.

I did have a warranty replacement issue with WD when they recalled several HD models eons ago. Their service was fantastic, they cross shipped the drive and they were very quick in their response. The Seagate I recently purchased, came directly from Amazon and it was shipped in a sort of loose fashion, inside the box. I could feel it sliding around which had me a bit worried. However, it's working fine and I havent had any problems with it. The HD I bought was an OEM drive. It came with only the drive in a bag and the usual adequate packing. It did not come with any cables, mounting rails or screws.

Amazon now has some of the best prices for increasing amounts of PC hardware and musical instrument items, which they werent that competitive with in the past. Now, with their low prices and free shipping, its my preferred source for many PC parts and an increasing number of other products. I've also received a WD hard disk from Amazon a week ago.

Summary: A great drive undone by Amazon's negligent packaging
Comment: As noted in other reviews this is a bare drive, wrapped only in a thin plastic anti-static bag. In stark contrast to every other hard drive that I have ordered over the Internet, Amazon provides almost no protective packaging for the drive in shipment.

When I opened the package from Amazon, tossed on my front porch by the UPS driver, I noticed a few air-packs on top of the drive and ABSOLUTELY NO PROTECTION BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVE AND THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX. In other words, the bare drive was placed in the box, a few air-packs were placed on top, and the package was shipped.

It is worth adding that Seagate will void the drive's 5-year warranty if "the drive experiences shock in excess of 350 Gs." How much is 350Gs? I am not sure, but I assume dropping the drive qualifies.

What this means is that Amazon's shipping practice for bare drives may void the warranty. The drive may not fail right away, but when it does, Seagate may not replace it if Seagate determines that the drive was dropped.

Until Amazon changes their packaging practices, I don't plan on buying any more bare drives from Amazon.

Update: October 15, 2008
Amazon exchanged the drive that had been poorly packed for one that was much more sensibly and protectively packaged -- double-boxed with the inner box resembling the retail box, where the drive is suspended and cradled at both ends by shock-absorbing plastic.
