Editorial Review:
After 50 years of bitter warfare in the late 21st century, a new crisis looms. A threat to the future and the overall existence of mankind. But, there is hope a savior will emerge… Casshern. Casshern is an action-packed, sci-fi thriller that blends Japanamation and manga-inspired live action to create a new hybrid form of filmmaking that is both visually stunning and thought provoking.
Kiriya Kazuaki’s spectacular Casshern is an impressive marriage of live action drama and animated effects that, taken together, look like something both very old and very new in cinema. A wild, science fiction tale with an echo or two of Bladerunner, Casshern is set in a dystopian future following a 50-year-long war between Europe and Asia. The latter wins, calling the resulting Eurasia the "Eastern Federation," but the high-tech weapons used in the battle have affected the whole of mankind through widespread devastation and illness. A geneticist whose son, Tetsuya (Yusuke Iseya), has gone off to fight terrorists, promises the military his work on "neo cells" will result in the cultivation of spare human parts for the wounded and afflicted. But two unexpected results occur: a small band of superhuman mutants rise up out of the scientist’s chemical muck, and Tetsuya--killed in battle--is brought back to life with his own superpowers. While the mutants rise up against the human race, Tetsuya, now known as "Casshern," takes them on against a fascinating psychological backdrop with Oedipal overtones. The film’s look of hyperreal, pop culture pastiche (in which action often evokes the look of 1930s movie serials blended with a whirl of dreamy, free-associating images) is reaching for the same thing as Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. But it is much grander in its effort. --Tom Keogh

Summary: I cant Imagine this movie being any longer...
Comment: Saw this movie at a store on sale for $4.00... So I was thinking "why not?", great price and its suppose to be as good as the matrix? Hell Yea!! Well the first half hour of the movie I was very interested by the plot. Afterwards, it just started going downhill for me, the visuals were nice, but more like a cartoon. Which makes sense since they were trying to get that anime feel, but the delivery was missing something. Since the whole movie is in front of a blue screen, it was a little let down for me. The whole feel of the movie wasn't meshing well, I can't pinpoint what it was exactly. I wasn't connected or really concerned for any of the characters either. So at the end when they were showing the neo's backstories, which should've been a tearjerking moment- I was more just waitng for the movie to end. The final end reminded me of "The Fountain", the souls were traveling through the universe, only to become lighting back on earth. Well, I added a star because the overall message of the movie was genuine. One last thought, I felt this movie was long enough, too drawn out on certain parts, and not enough coverage on others... but now I see there is another version that is even longer--- wow I wouldnt be able to make it on that one.. I get the point fully with this version.

Summary: This movie lost me a third of the way into it.
Comment: Scientist found a way to regenerate body parts, but the body parts had minds of their own and created a new race. And wanted to take over the earth and run things their way. That's when I got lost. I thought it was hard to follow, maybe I'll try to watch it again another time and figure it out. Maybe not.

Summary: Great film, but do not buy this truncated American dvd version
Comment: Casshern is a great flim, that really probably requires 3 viewings to truly appreciate. (My first viewing I thought it was really cool, the second time I wasn't sure what I thought about the movie, then the third time (perhaps the first time on a wide-screen tv) I thought it was great.) So why, now, would the American release of the film cut out a full 18 minutes out of the film?! The movie can be difficult for new viewers to understand at first viewing and this vastly truncated release does not help understanding the story at all. The correct running time for this film is 135 minutes. At any rate, a film with great visuals, cool characters, an interesting storyline. Basically a very well done superhero movie.

Summary: Hypnotic Casshern
Comment: Strange, imaginative, and mesmerizing, Casshern is like nothing else on film. Science fiction? fantasy? this futuristic film grabs you with its imagery, color, stylized action, and catapaults you to another world in its depiction of good and evil, science vs humanism, and the ultimate redemptive climax will leave you breathless. Powerful, hypnotic, engrossing, Casshern is one to add to your collection.

Summary: astonishing stunning mythic visual
Comment: this is the best movie i have seen in a long time. now i love classic cyberpunk in the neuromancer/snow crash mode & philip k dick type virtual reality science fiction, so if you don't enjoy these styles as much as i do then you might not like this as much, but anybody who likes futuristic, surreal visuals will love this. there is more to it than that, though, including a mythic storyline that refers to many classic themes & will remind one of certain religious figures. the nearest references would be "blade runner," "tron" & "metropolis," but this really goes beyond any of these visually & stylistically. you will see fight scenes between mythic, godlike figures that will blow you away, but most of all you will be enchanted by constantly beautiful visuals that are often moving & add up to a stunning & astonishing art film.
