Summary: not what i expected
Comment: this was not why i expected. i thought it would be an easy gadget, but it was not. it doesn't even have an on/off button. the turntable never worked. the instructions suggest what u need to do should the turntable not spin. I didn't even try it, just a waste of time. amazon's return policy makes it so easy to return the item back that i have no regrets on getting it as long as it was from Amazon.

Summary: ION TTUSB05 USB Turntable
Comment: I have been waiting for this product since a co worker told me about it. I've been using it since I recieved it and was able to transfer all my records. It took me a while to figure it out and some items I haven't yet.I was able to transfer some old 78 records from my mothers collections and was able to remove most of the scratches. I recommend it to someone with patience.

Summary: Works, but there are much better turntables. LIGHTEN THE NEEDLE BEFORE USE
Comment: This turntable gets the job done for transferring vinyl to the computer, but the lack of an anti-skate means the music transferred can at times have a left-channel bias, the left channel being louder than the right in the music. Also, I really have a problem with the complete lack of weight marks on the tonearm counterweight.

Even though this turntable is made to be usable right out of the box, I recommend balancing the tonearm as much as is possible before really using. To do this, you need a screwdriver. The counterweight is screwed into the back of the tonearm, and I recommend, before using the turntable, that you back out the tonearm weight with the screwdriver until it wants to fall out, then screw it back in 1/4 at a time until it just barely stays in place. The needle now may only want to stay airborne, or the tonearm may completely balanced, but I doubt this. If the needle doesn't want to drop on its own now, screw the weight back in a 1/2 turn at a time until it barely does.

Now put on a record you don't care about messing up and see if the turntable will play it without the needle skating across it. If the needle doesn't skate any, the turntable's now ready to use. If it skates, screw the tonearm counterweight back in a 1/2 turn, and try playing the record again. Repeat this as necessary until the needle doesn't skate.

This procedure sets up the needle to apply as little force as possible to your records, and also allows the needle to vibrate as freely as possible.

Summary: Good product, great service
Comment: I am quite happy with this turntable. It is making a simple job out of a stack of vinyl transfers, though it does take some time to clean up the recording. I'm using the Audacity software (which is freeware, btw) that was bundled with it. It's pretty powerful for noise removal and editing, but not as straightforward as one might wish. I had hoped to use the Gracenote software to auto-label the tracks, but you can't have everything. I like the fact that no additional preamp is needed, but I tend to agree with others who thought the platen of the turntable is a little light. Overall it's a good price for what you get.

Summary: Glitches, but a Fine Product in the End
Comment: When I first received this product, I had several problems for which there was no truth-in-advertising warning. I tried to hook it to my computer with a 12 foot USB cable, so I could keep the turntable linked to my stereo. I was able to obtain a signal, but very faint. The cure here was to set the turntable next to my computer and attach with a much shorter USB cable (which meant I had to move my printer).
My next problem was intermittent static. After a few frustrating days of troubleshooting the problem, I discovered my Mac's audio driver wasn't compatible with the turntable. The solution was to download an older audio driver of Apple's. After that everything worked fine.
Using the EZ Audio Converter is a good match for most of my vinyl, but I have a few records that were loaned out over the years and consequently came home with minor scratches. ION makes available a piece of software that can damp out such things, but I have yet to be able to make it work.
But for most of my vinyl-to-digital transfers, the turntable and the EZ software work great.
