Summary: Very effecetive with minimal side effects
Comment: 1000mg cap after both breakfast and dinner along with low fat whole grain diet and my cholesterol dropped over 100 point to 144 (88 ldl, 42 hdl). It took 9 months to work up to this dose without flush. I tried statins 1st but I could not get used to the side effects and it also did not raise hdl which used to be very low (28). I do not know if twinlabs is any better than any other brand but their niacin worked great for me.

Summary: On time, good price - will it reduce triglycerides?
Comment: You gotta make sure you take it on a full stomach - otherwise, gentlemen, you will get a taste of what our lady-friends call a 'hot-flash'. (My hat's off to the ladies.) Its effect on my triglycerides will be known a few weeks hence. If it works - I will continue them - if not - I will not.
I'm taking one a day.

Summary: Beware of the "Niacin Flush"
Comment: I bought these because they were an incredible price ($3.71 for a pack of 3!), and I think TwinLab products are of excellent quality.

Just be forewarned that these definitely cause "the niacin flush", and that's using 1/2 of the 1000mg capsule (I open the capsule and pour 1/2 into a glass of water, then take the other 1/2 in the evening, and I always take it after a meal).

Summary: Better than prescription drugs
Comment: Niacin is better than prescription drugs for improving your HDL/LDL cholesterol ratio, and has far fewer serious side effects. This particular brand of niacin is probably no better or worse than any other brand, but the 1000 mg capsules are more convenient than taking numerous smaller capsules.

Yes, flushing can be a very annoying side effect with large doses of niacin but it is not life or health threatening and it can be managed. Here are the steps, in order of importance, to control flushing:

1. Make sure your body is fully hydrated before taking niacin, i.e don't take it while dehydrated.

2. Work up to the desired dose. Start with a small dose, maybe 500 mg, and work up to 2,000 or 3,000 mg.

3. It is best not to take niacin on an empty stomach.

4. Take a baby aspirin 1/2 hour before taking niacin.

**** This is the obligatory consult your doctor warning. At large doses, niacin is more like a drug than a vitamin supplement. As with many drugs, there is a small possibility of liver damage. This should be monitored with periodic blood test.

Summary: Better than Niaspan
Comment: Used to be on Niaspan till I retired and had to pay out of pocket for my meds. This product does what it is supposed to do and the "hot flash" (produced by all niacin mega-doses) was minimal, and, if taken immediately before going to bed, not at all noticeable.
