After my first stab (!) at using OB in my late teens, I've never gone back to using tampons with applicators, except for one time when I was staying at an older relative's house and all she could offer were old-style tampons. OBs are easy to insert and more convenient to stash in your purse or even a small wallet.

This variant in the pink packaging is the lowest level of absorbency designed for light menstrual flow. But even when it's not my period, I use it in lieu of a pantyliner. I realize that's not recommended because it might dry you out too much and/or make you susceptible to Toxic Shock Syndrome, but I've always been a bad girl.

Summary: Perhaps the only tampon worth buying
Comment: I searched high and low in the USA for tampons without applicators. (Who invented the silly idea of applicators anyway? Do American toiletry manufacturers not like the idea of women using their fingers down there?) O.B.s are a little harder or more compact than the ones I'm used to overseas. They don't expand in all directions quite as well as I'm used to, either, but still do so much better than any applicator tampon I've tried.

I don't know how those of you who grew up with applicators would handle (so to speak) a switch to O.B. but I recommend trying. I never used applicators until forced to through lack of options, and found them to be - in a word - horrible.

Thankfully, I found out about O.B.

My search continues for non-anti-bacterial handwash and a decent liquid anti-perspirant.
