This is a pivotal chapter from my forthcoming book, A Dash of Style: The Art and Mastery of Punctuation. In the book, I aim to discuss punctuation in the broadest sense: how has punctuation been used (or not used) by the great literary masters, and how can it make you a better writer? Comment: As a 40-year journalist (columnist/editor/publisher), and now author of three books, I thought I knew it all (famous last words). I was always fairly confident of my punctuation, grammar, POV, and the various techniques of writing, but frankly admit that I often hesitated when it came to paragraph and section breaks.
