Customer Rating: Summary: DOA Comment: This was the first shaver that I have bought in just over 20 years. I was interested to see what improvements have been made in the last two decades.
Upon opening the box, I was a little perplexed by the "quality travel bag" included with the shaver. Let me elaborate on that...
The "quality travel bag" is simply a small soft nylon sack with a velcro closure flap on the top. The confusing part is that the cord that is included with the shaver has a head on it that makes me think of Charlie Brown. Yes, it really is THAT big - approximately one half of the size of the head of the shaver. Not quite big enough to use as a lunch box, but you have to wonder what they packed in there to make it so big. Anyways, this combination of a laughably large plug and a puzzlingly small travel bag makes for a situation where the intended contents of the bag simply won't fit into it. I have studied the mathematical branch called topology that deals with the manipulation of surfaces and I have a great deal of experience with geometry, and still I would not get everything to fit into the "quality travel bag". If you managed to get it all in there, then my hat is off to you.
Now of course, I bought the shaver for the shaver, not the bag so I wouldn't blame you if you thought that I am overstating the importance of this. But this is an indication of an overall lack of thought being put into the product itself. This was also a case of foreshadowing while I waited for the 24 hour period to elapse before I tried the shaver for the first time.
Once the time had elapsed, I tried the shaver. It gave a brief 100 millisecond or so "whirrr" sound and then went dead. I plugged it in, and it worked fine. This is kind of odd behavior for a "cordless" shaver that requires it to be plugged in.
I work as an Electrical Engineer for a manufacturing company. My personal belief is that each time a product arrives DOA (dead on arrival) that you have just lost a customer. A company MUST have several layers of testing for their products before they go out the door. The receipt of a DOA product must be an indication of either an extremely unlikely event, a failure of multiple levels of checks, or a disregard for the quality of their product. Given the relatively high frequency with which products are found to be DOA, I tend to chalk it up to a disregard for quality.
This morning I shaved again with my 20 year old Phillips corded shaver that I bought before I could afford a cordless. It may be dated, but at least it works as it was intended to. Customer Rating: Summary: Remington R9190 Comment: Although the design and features of this razor are nice, the shave is lacking. After using this unit I still feel and look like I need a shave. The Remington foils do a much better job. Customer Rating: Summary: A Very Close Shave Comment: Another reviewer indicated that this shaver drew blood. Indeed it did. It produces an extremely close shave, so close in fact, that for the first couple of weeks it actually caused razor burns.
BUT, the good news is that after a few weeks the razor burn stopped, presumably as the blades wear in, and the remaining shaves are significantly closer than I've ever gotten with an electric. Additionally, the cutting heads are very hard to remove to clean at first, but also, get easier with use.
I'm really enjoying it now.
Customer Rating: Summary: This one drew blood Comment: I do not understand how a company could engineer such a device that would actually shave the skin from your neck, but they have. I got this as an early Christmas present and tried it this evening. It literally ate me up. I've been using the same Braun shaver for many years and decided I would ask for a new shaver. My wife feels very guilty now.
