Softer skin and hair in 1 week, guaranteed
Voted Product Of The Year by Cosmetology Today
Editorial Review:
The Aquasana Shower Filter. Softer skin and hair in 1 week, guaranteed! A truly amazing product, offers dramatic health & cosmetic benefits... Its like showering in natural spring water. Recently voted Product Of The Year by Cosmetology Today Magazine... One of the most amazing products you'll ever own... The Aquasana Shower Filter has 2 seperate filter stages... One that takes out all the chlorine and balances the pH, the other filters out harmful VOCs that vaporize while showering and are unhealthful to inhale. Installs in seconds and provides naturally healthy, filtered water for showering. The healthiest most refreshing shower you'll ever have ever! Offers tremendous benefits to people with skin conditions and breathing disorders. The benefits are immediately noticeable and long lasting. It s Like Showering In Natural Spring Water Stage 1 removes chlorine and enhances pH balance with a natural copper/ zinc mineral media called KDF-55D. The second filtration stage uses a carbonized coconut shell media for the removal of synthetic chemicals and VOCs that vaporize and can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin potentially causing adverse health and cosmetic effects. The result is the healthiest, most refreshing shower experience you'll ever have... for only 21 a day! Anyone who has ever swam in a chlorinated pool knows how chlorine robs moisture from skin and hair. What most don't realize is that typically there is as much or more chlorine in your tap water as in most swimming pools. Chlorine strips the natural protective oils from skin and hair, causing excess dryness. Without the harsh influences of chlorine you ll notice significant cosmetic benefits... Softer skin & hair in a week or your money back! Also by removing chlorine and other chemicals found in tap water, you eliminate health risks related to inhalation and skin absorption of these chemicals... now known to be a significant source of exposure to harmful VOCs (volatile organic chemicals). Summary: Not a good filter
Comment: My wife and I bought an Aquasana water filtering system a few months ago and I must say that it has not been a good experience. In fact since then I have decided to avoid anything from Aquasana. The device is not well made. Changing the filters is very difficult because the plastic nut that must be loosened and tightened is hard to grasp and tends to strip. After two filter changes our unit is useless because of this cheaply made soft plastic nut. Within a few weeks the unit leaks and the shut off valve stops working automatically. It sticks in the open position and must be closed manually. Recently we purchased another system from Puritec and have been much happier with it and with the service that the company provides.

Summary: filters well, but fragile it is
Comment: We've had this for almost 3 years now.
It seems to do pretty well at filtering out chlorine, judging by smell and how my skin/hair feel. It does make a difference in how both feel.
I'd love to see actual measurements of chlorine reduction over time.

There's two of us, we take a shower each almost everyday (a bit overkill in my mind, sorry mom) and the filter seems to last 3 to 4 months. But remember there's no quantitative analysis going on here.

The whole contraption, with the exception the connections, is plastic. Given the mechanical loads it undergoes it's not surprising that it breaks fairly easily. The housing has fractured on ours with no unusual force being encountered.
( Ahhh epoxy... Wasn't I trying to *reduce* my exposure to something or another? Oops. )

Taking apart a used filter reveals a simple case containing what I assume to be activated charcoal, exactly like you may buy for an aquarium filter with a little bit of paper or synthetic mesh I assume is for sediment. Only thing is that if you did buy this much charcoal from a pet store, it would cost about one tenth what a replacement filter cost.

All filters must reduce water flow to some degree. This filter does pretty well here, the reduction is minimal.

If you're looking to reduce the odor (at least) of chlorine and don't have kids, and don't mind the steep replacement filter costs, and promise not to ever overtighten anything, nor ever to drop, pull, or stare directly into its eyes then this is the filter for you!!

Not awful but not recommended.

Summary: Absolutely Amazing!
Comment: I moved to Atlanta about nine months ago with my husband who has eczema, and we both began to notice serious skin irritation from the water here. For me, it was a matter of some discomfort, as well as developing dandruff problems for the first time in my life, but my husband's skin was going crazy. Finally after six months of suffering through this, I decided to buy him a shower filtration system for Valentine's Day. I wasn't sure what to expect, and I was really just hoping for any little change for the better.

That said, I was BLOWN AWAY by the enormous positive change in the quality of the water using this filter. The first time I used it, I came out of the shower and my skin felt like I had just spent half a day at a spa. I had been getting a blotchy red rash on my chest and back after showering before using this filter (probably from all the chlorine and other junk in the water), but the rash has completely gone away since we started using this filter. My husband also experienced tremendous relief from his eczema problems. Taking a shower feels so healthy now. We've been using it for about a month and I can't imagine ever going back.

A few other reviewers mentioned problems with the weight or installation or the casing cracking on this filter. I didn't have any of these problems. Even with the old, shaky pipes in my house, this filter was incredibly easy to install. The entire process, including the carbon filter flush, took me about ten minutes. The only thing that surprised me was that the water initially comes out with quite a lot of pressure when doing the filter flush, so I had to quickly move the bucket I was using to catch the carbonated water farther down the tub than I had anticipated (obviously not a big deal).

This filter is one of the best purchases I've ever made; although I haven't tried other models, if you want something that definitely works, this is what you're looking for.

Summary: Using Aquasana shower filter for the first time.
Comment: I just received my filter today [with the optional extension piece since the combined price took an additional 10 dollars off the hose extension].

My review is on the installation and reaction with a first shower [I just stepped out of the shower and wanted to share my thoughts].

1) The initial unpackaging, installation, and prep work was as not difficult as I imaged it would be: unscrew your old shower piece with a nice size wrench [I used one that allows you to change sizes of clamp - like a monkey wrench], you then *carefully* hold your new filter up and screw it in, then look for a nice medium size bucket to catch the water in when you first turn on the water...this part is the part every seems to leave out. You need to be very careful with the pressure of water when you first turn on the shower. I put the water on at near full speed and the water splattered all over the dry bucket and realizing that when you first run water through the unit, there is a bunch of black water (this is the carbon filter that even fish filters use). I ended up with black water splattered all over the sides of the shower walls in places I could not reach. I was standing on the shower/bath rim trying to reach these black water spots and realized how dangerous this was. Becareful of the speed of water when you first run the unit!

2) There was a leak. Not a profuse leak at first, but a moderate speed of water dripping from the space where the shower piece and the water pipe (from the wall) meet. I had my wrench handy to find the "sweet spot" to tighten or loosen the unit to stop the leak. Going in either direction cause the drop to accelerate and even eventually turn to a small leaking flow of water! I figure rather than over wearing the shower unit's metal contact piece and the pieces inside (i.e. washer and plastic parts), I need to visit LOWES or Home Depot to purchase some of that white vinyl tape wrap that you put over screw pieces to stop leaks. Don't over exert yourself on stopping the leak by repeatedly loosening/tightening the piece, it does not work.

3) If you buy the separate hose attachment, the filter and hose take up a lot of space and you end of angling the clamp that holds the "wand" piece nearly horizontally. The water will shoot out the other end of the shower and hit the wall...splashing water all outside the shower as well. The way around this was rotating the filter at a slight angle, so its not hanging completely down vertically. This leaves room for the clamp to angle lower so your wand will shoot right where you are standing.

4) The water quality is noticeably different. I checked my local water district's water quality table online [just Googled my city + "water"] and it turns out Chlorine was one of the words listed on that table. I have noticed that whenever I took showers the water would leave my skin extremely dry to the point where it felt sticky and tact. After stepping out of the shower just now, it feels less so. I imagine it will be even better later on as I continue to use the shower filter.

*Update: April 8, 2008*

Its been almost a month since my review of first use. After one weeks use of the shower, a fine size crack appeared on the hose attachment. I e-mailed the main company site and they sent my a new hose free of charge [without having to send in the defective one]. I still have a leak, but the leak is only a slow steady drip, and I hardly notice it. Since my first shower, I noticed that the quality of the water purity has been less clean/fresh than when I first used the unit. Though there is a difference than when I showered without the filter [especially the grainy/sandy/dry feeling on my skin], this feeling on my skin has come back to a noticeable degree even with the filter on! For the price, trouble of replacing the hose unit, the problems when installing the unit, and the noticeable decline in water quality in only less than a month [please note, I have checked my local water district to make sure the added chemicals were ones that Aquasana stated it could filter], I would take back the 4 star review and give it a 3 or even a 2 and 1/2 stars.
