Editorial Review:
Athletes who want to boost their performance and folks who suffer from breathlessness can all benefit from using this ingenious breathing exerciser. Here’s how it works: after positioning the soft mouthpiece between the teeth and gums and biting down to create an airtight seal, the user breathes in sharply and continues to breathe in hard for as long as possible. Then the breath is slowly exhaled. When repeated 25 times, twice daily, for at least a month, the exercises should noticeably increase breathing strength. As improvement occurs, the user can increase resistance by simply turning one or both parts of the device: the end cap (which holds a lightweight ball) and the valve sleeve. Measuring 5 by 2 by 1-1/4 inches, the Ultrabreathe is so compact it will fit in a pocket or travel kit for use at work, in bed, or on the road. --Ann Bieri

Summary: use with caution
Comment: Unlike muscles in your arms or legs, they are able to grow outward but your muscles used for breathing are mostly internal to your ribs. THese muscles dont grow outward, they grow inward, potentially decreasing your lung volumes and that falls under the "work smarter not harder" principle...why make your lungs work harder having to move air more quickly when you could increase your volumes, requiring less breathing therefore less effort. Minute volume is your breathes per minute times the amount of air you move in and out of your lungs (rate x volume), if you decrease the volume of each breath you have to increase your rate to be able to cyle the same amount of air per minute. Athletes breath harder because the lungs breath out carbon dioxide which is a byproduct of strenous activity (the short explanation). The harder your workout, the more CO2 you produce, requiring a higher minute volume to blow the CO2 out. As you breathe oxygen is taken from the air and goes into your bloodstream and carbon dioxide is released from your bloodstream, into the air in your lungs, and then is exhaled. Obstructive or restrictive lung disease is not about the strength to move air in and out, its about physical deformities of the airways causing increased airway resistance...this technology reminds me of the old "blow bottles" that inhalation therapy used to use back in the 70's (inhalation therapy currently known as respiratory therapy) and that technology was discontinued because it showed to actually cause lung damage instead of a benefit. Blowing too hard against a resistance can cause all sorts of damamge to the lung tissue (called baurotrauma). Instead learn how to have better breathing techniques like pursed lip breathing which causes a small amount of back pressure (PEEP) naturally and you are born with lips so nothing needs to be purchased....plus the levels are safer than when incorrectly using an artifical device. A normal person would have no need for such a device.

Summary: Strengthens lung function
Comment: I'm no doctor, so I'm only writing this as someone with breathing problems.

Inhaling is mostly a passive function. So when you use this device, the muscles involved in inhaling are coaxed into being active. I can feel them working differently than they usually do, and it's quite a workout!

It's analogous to the benefit that a really bulked-up football player gets when he stretches. Most of the time he's contracting his muscles, but it's important that he lengthen them, too. In yoga, when you do any posture, you almost always follow up with a complementary position -- a counterposture. In both activities, maintaining flexibility doesn't only enhance your ability; it also helps prevent injury.

When I use this device, I can feel muscles that I don't usually feel, and they're getting stronger. It increases my stamina and helps me prevent the symptoms that usually accompany strenuous activity. It works beautifully for me.

Summary: Gag gift for a friend
Comment: This showed up in my gold box one day and it seemed like a funny gag gift for a friend of mine, so I bought it. We've all had a good laugh about it and she enjoys doing her breathing exercises daily.
