Customer Rating: Summary: Volleyball at its best! Comment: This subscription was for our granddaughter who is a volleyball player at high school and in club competition. She was thrilled to have the initial subscription so we renewed it for another year.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best overall coverage of U.S. indoor and beach vb Comment: This is the grandson of the old Volleyball Monthly. Covers the indoor game from juniors to the olympics. Covers beach volleyball from 10-and-unders through the AVP and a number of the semi-pro events around the country.
Volleyball is a niche sport and Volleyball Magazine is largely what ties the community together. If you're a player or a fan not subscribing, you're missing out. Customer Rating: Summary: Comprehensive but written at a rather amateurish level... Comment: Volleyball Magazine is essentially operating as a monopoly, with no other magazines currently published specifically about the national volleyball scene here in the U.S. As such, it provides the best information available to stay abreast with the latest happenings at the high school and juniors, college, pro beach, and U.S. national team levels. In keeping with this breadth of focus, the magazine does a good job of covering each of those areas. It also has special issues that highlight the latest in volleyball shoes, volleyballs and other equipment. They even have articles with coaching tips and training programs.
Despite this wide-ranging coverage of my favorite sport of volleyball, I just allowed my subscription (active since I began playing volleyball almost 15 years ago) to run out, and I no longer receive Volleyball Magazine. This is due to the reality that the quality of the writing has deteriorated to the point that it often reads like a high school newspaper. The publisher of the magazine has changed several times over the past decade, and it has dramatically affected the magazine each time. Most recently, I have noticed that the editor-in-chief actually writes about half of the articles, with the other half being written by another editor. No national magazine should have such a limited writing staff, especially when the writing is at such a mediocre level.
Ultimately, Volleyball Magazine will keep any interested volleyball fan relatively well-informed in what is happening around the country and even the world. However, I could no longer handle the poor writing and would suggest that anyone looking for any thoughtful or engaging stories will need to look elsewhere. Customer Rating: Summary: If you love the sport, this mag is for you Comment: This is the old standby volley mag. It's been around as long as I can remember. It's filled with insightful tips and commentary by some of the best players from hard court and the beach. Covering lots of indoors and youth players as well as the sand game during the summer. I can't say that I don't wish there were another vb mag out there that was willing to cover even a little of the grass roots scene that's out there. The sport is immeasurably fun. Shouldn't the one magazine dedicated to playing it be about exploring more of the volley-verse than just who's playing at the olympic training center lately? How about some euro-league covers or interviews with some of the leathery guys who are like 90 and still play sand at the Santa Monica pier? Just my 2.
