Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Comment: I bought the LM900 at a yard sale 7 years ago for $5!- I've learned a few tricks over the years to get the most out my bargain. This is not a totally maintenance free box - you have to treat it nicely! We have three large Wegies - OMG! Do you know how big the badders are on those babies? Clumps the size of boulders, I tell you! I use scoopaway litter, though it does sometimes get stuck in the corners. To prevent sticking, I use a light coating of heavy duty silicone spray on the bottom of the (clean)box, rake and track. Voila, problem solved! Also, you may have seen the ads for the cart (Litterwo***)to put your littermaid onto. Being the bargain conscious Mom that I am, I did not spend the $100+ for that cat waste marvel. I put my littermaid on a small(kid)table in the laundry room. I cut the bottom out of a receptacle and used duct tape to firm up the sides of the receptacle. Next, I used a heavy duty shopping bag (UnderArmor- perfect fit) and folded the top over the receptacle lip. Secure bag to receptacle with duct tape. Cut the bottom of the bag open. Use another thin piece of duct tape across the edge of the box to hold the receptacle in place (only to the edge, not flapped over into the box). Slide the box so that your new chute hangs off the end and run it into a small trash can lined with a quality Target shopping bag - (Walmart bags rip). All the clumps automatically go into your now huge receptacle, easily emptied by a small child! (Smart thinkin' huh?) Just give it a looksie every couple of days and add more litter, sending aforementioned small child in to replace Target bags. Bonus- you no longer have to buy $12 a box receptacles! For now we're planning eldercare for this box - do I hold the record for longest owned box? When it dies we will replace it with the same model - whatever the price.

Comment: The rake is difficult to clean. If your cat has hard little turds, buy it. If the fecal matter that you have to deal with is soft or runny,its easier to scoop.

Summary: LitterMaid LM900 Self-Cleaning Litter Box "Old Style"
Comment: I just purchased my 2nd LitterMaid LM900 Self-Cleaning Litter Box Old Style. My first one worked great for 7 years without any problems until now. My cats used it to death. Dont get me wrong you still have to tend to the litter box on a daily basis but its low maintenance when you compare it to scooping out a stinky litter box several times a day. You need to add litter when it is running low, change the waste receptacle when it is full, clean up a little bit of litter that scatters on the floor, and clean the rake and box as needed. I purchased waste receptacle liners for mine. These are small liners aka plastic bags that fit into the waste receptacle so I can be reused. Boy do they save some time & money!

I also have one of the Littermaid LME9000 Elite Mega Self-Cleaning Litter Box New Style is a total waste of money. I purchased it from Pet Smart about a year ago for $160.00 dollars. I figured that I would give the "new & improved" box a try b/c I was so happy with my old one. Boy was I wrong. I don't recommend purchasing this product at all it is the biggest waste of money. It make so much noise when it rakes the litter box, doesnt scoop up all the used litter (even when using a premium clumping litter), and it makes a mess all over the floor when it drops the litter clumps into the waste receptacle. In addition to the extremely expensive litter box not working properly as advertised the rake broke while in use. One of the side wheels that is located on the side of the rake, that sits in the inside track which allows and guide the rake to clean the box broke off. Contacted customer service and was advised that if I want a replacement rake I would have to purchase one even though the litter box is barely a year old. This just added insult to injury. I already spent $160.00 for a unit that doesn't work properly and now have to pay an additional $18.00 dollars plus shipping to replace a part. That's just a bunch of Poop.

Over all I'm very happy with the LitterMaid LM900 Self-Cleaning Litter Box "Old Style" especially when I compare it to the Littermaid LME9000 Elite Mega Self-Cleaning Litter Box "New Style". If you are considering purchasing a Littermaid Self-Cleaning Litter Box please do your homework and read the product reviews. I personally would stay away from the new style units they are extremely expensive and don't work.

I purchased my new one on Amazon and received free super saver shipping. The litter box was delivered in just a few days.

Summary: This is a Good Product
Comment: We have two of the Littermaid Mega LM900 litter boxes, and would buy another one. They work reasonably well, and save a lot of scooping time & effort. As other reviewers have noted, it works OK, but not perfect. Help is needed at times, but it's still a big benefit to have. The rakes need to be cleaned periodically, since the clumps are not fully dried after 10 minutes. And the litter needs to be redistributed away from the collection box several times each week as a result of the rakes getting filled with wet clumps. Our cats used it almost immediately after it was set up, and still seem to enjoy watching it operate.

We have had one unit for about 18 months, and added a second recently. Both work equally well. We use plastic grocery bags in the collection box, which is easier than using the plastic boxes. You may wish to add a timer to turn it off over-night, so it doesn't wake you.

Summary: This is my favorite self-cleaning litter box
Comment: I have multiple cats and have tried many different litter boxes. With the exception of one unit, this has been my favorite of them all. As long as you have good clumping litter, it works beautifully. The only drawbacks are that it can be a little messy disposing of the waste and the litter goes around the unit, but it is easy to clean.
