Editorial Review:
For patients with hypertension, home monitoring can help detect dangerous blood-pressure spikes before they cause problems. Tracking measurements over time also gives a better overall picture of health than a single reading at a hospital or clinic, where nervousness can often distort results. But the most sophisticated blood-pressure monitor in the world won't do a thing for hypertension if you need a nurse to help you use it. The Lumiscope self-taking blood-pressure monitor makes it possible to take the same kind of extremely accurate blood-pressure readings you get in the doctor's office, all without leaving your home. It's lightweight and highly portable, so you can keep track of your health on the road. And like most manual blood-pressure monitors, it's relatively unaffected by small movements and is not especially fussy about cuff placement and arm positioning. The D-bar style cuff makes it easy to get a good fit when you're taking your own blood pressure and have only one hand free: just pull down and cinch tight. The attached stethoscope is also a must if you're going solo. The measurement process involves letting the pressure out at the correct rate while listening for the thump through the stethoscope and simultaneously taking two readings on the gauge. The entire process requires a certain degree of coordination and is best employed after a few practice runs in the doctor's office. The bottom line: this is one of the easier-to-use manual models around, but it's still best if you have someone to help. --Mary Park
Customer Reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: good ? bad? Comment: I'm a medical student. This one is not quite suitable but unfortunately I bought it based on the multiple positive feedbacks from the other buyers.
To measure BP by yourself, maybe this one is fine. But I do measure for other people, it's annoying -- the pad is attached to the wrap. Someone mentioned the case is good but that's not usable at all when you hooked everything together.
Don't buy this model if you want to help others.
Customer Rating: Summary: not bad Comment: Easy to use, as long as you've had a lesson from your doctor. Packing it back up is a bit of a pain, but otherwise, well worth the money Customer Rating: Summary: good for PRO's. Comment: if you are a buying this then you are a professional or close to that and know exactly what to expect from this aparatus.
Newbies- try this one Omron HEM-432C instead. Customer Rating: Summary: Monitoring my BP in San Jose CA Comment: It's a pretty good deal for the price. I have a hard time hearing my heartbeat "thump" thru the stethoscope so I had a friend try it. She said the sound was a bit faint but she was able to take the reading on the first try. That's the only drawback to this product that I can see. I'm sure that with more practice I will be able to do it myself so I am going to keep trying. It's simple to use and one person (yourself) can do it.
I think it's a great way monitor your blood pressure and to watch for significant changes so you can alert your doctor before it's too late. Customer Rating: Summary: Quality looks good, but cuff is way too small Comment: The size limitation is not listed on the Amazon site, but according to the Lumiscope help line this model is limited to arm circumferences 12.5" or less. That's too small for an adult male with average musculature. I'm no muscle-man but my arm is 13" around the biceps, and the cuff was not even close to big enough. I had to return mine to Amazon.
