"America has given birth to a wisdom tradition entirely its own, a spirituality as diverse as its people." With this observation, Elizabeth Lesser begins The New American Spirituality – a lucid and thought-provoking investigation into the evolution of spiritual awakening in our time. From Sufism and yoga to Eastern meditation practices and transpersonal psychology, Lesser examines crucial questions that no single tradition can answer alone: What happens when we combine different meditations and traditions? How do you assess the authenticity of a teacher or therapist? Is your spiritual practice really working? How can you tell? Join the cofounder of the Omega Institute as she speaks to these issues with uncommon clarity and depth – to help you discover the seeds of a spiritual life that works for you. Includes a complete 60-minute mindfulness and heartfulness meditation session.

Customer Rating: Summary: The Seeker's Guide Comment: I adore the book. I heard the author speaking on Oprah and knew I would love what she had to say....and I do! There is much value in her words. Customer Rating: Summary: Thank You!!!!!!!! Comment: I have not read the book as of yet and I am actually giving all the reviews on here 5 stars because they are honest, they don't attack the author and I love the way each person wrote their review!!!!! Thank you, I truly have a desire to read this book now because of all the awesome reviews. Customer Rating: Summary: A Struggling Seeker Comment: I am about two-thirds into The Seeker's Guide. I read 10 - 20 pages per day. The subject matter is very interesting to me. However, I'm finding the writing tedious. I often re-read exerpts and have difficulty with Ms. Lesser's personal reactions to everything she has experienced. I find myself wanting to know her experiences but not her evaluation. She's traveled a phenomonal path and I'm anxious to learn about her evolvement, relationships, travels and teachers. Just as I begin to have some vicarious experience, I'm thrown off by another personal opinion she has. I find it distracting. To me, it feels like she wrote more for her personal gratification and not so much to assist the reader in a search for spirituality. Still valuable stuff! Customer Rating: Summary: Hard to read Comment: This book is extremely hard to read because of the small print--some lines are squeezed together and the print becomes even smaller. The reader needs to be aware that this book is dry and much like a text book. The author concentrates so much time on her lifestory. There are many other books about spirituality that are positive and uplifting for the reader to enjoy. Customer Rating: Summary: Loved this book Comment: Nicely written, personal and relevant for anyone "seeking" information on spirituality. It doesn't promise anything but makes a compelling case for meditation. Several tips for meditating are offered throughout the book and a variety of specific meditation practices are available to integrate into your life. I liked that the author understands that changing your daily routine to include meditation takes forgiveness and patience. If it becomes an exercise in obligations too early on, one may be easily discouraged.
Well done and enjoyable read promoting meditation as part of a spiritual path.
