Editorial Review:

He was Sammy the Bull Gravano’s partner in the killing of Paul Castellano. John Gotti hired him to torture and kill his neighbor. A favorite among all the seven East Coast crime families, Richard “Ice Man” Kuklinski conducted his business with coldhearted intensity. By his own estimate, he murdered over two hundred men, taking enormous pride in his variety and ferocity of technique.

But behind Kuklinski’s trail of murder was a traditional, loving, Catholic family. A married father of three, Kuklinski was always regarded as being especially kind to children; he threw summer block parties in his New Jersey neighborhood, and he was always generous around Christmastime. And before his crimes finally caught up with him, his family never suspected a thing…

Summary: False
Comment: The author himself told me personally that since writing the book, he now knows Richard did not commit the big mob hits. He did not kill Hoffa, Galante, Carlo C., Demeo and sure enough was not in with the five families.

The book is good, if you get past the repition and the false claims by Richard Kuklinski.

Yes, he did kill people and its a good book, but half of it is not true. If you can get past the fantasy world of Kuklinski and the writing style of Carlo, then this is a solid read for any fan of the genre.

Summary: Good True Crime, Very ironic.
Comment: Personally I do not follow these things, apparently a lot of people do, say like a sports team. I like the story, the characters, the author brings all this to life quite vividly. But, if judges, district attorneys, police and juries can't get the justice process right half the time; Questioning the protagonist's integrity ( self-admitted sociopath ), seems to me to be an oxymoron. It would be great if his wife or children would write a memoir, to give this book some continuity . Hate the disease, not the person ?. Also recommend: For the Sins of My Father: A Mafia Killer, His Son, and the Legacy of a Mob Life.

Summary: Don't piss him off!!!
Comment: I had never heard of The Ice Man until my friend at work was talking about him. Being very interested in the serial killer and the mob and such, this of course piqued my interest. Then, wouldn't you know it I happened to be home one afternoon and the Montel Williams show was on TV. He just happened to have Phillip Carlo on and he was talking about this book. I can't say how interesting this guy was to be such a family man but yet such a cold blooded killer was unbelievable. Like the modern day jekyl and hyde. I can't believe how brutal he was and yet not feel anything. This to me is amazing and Phillip Carlo captured this in his book. I will note however that since the publication of this book Iceman has since died. I won't tell you how but I found out on the Montel Williams show!

Summary: Interesting story, terrible writing
Comment: If I was rating this book on the author Philip Carlo's writing ability alone I would give it 1 and a half stars. The repetition, the cliches, the poor sentence structure were enough to stop me reading any other book. Luckily for Carlo he has a compelling character to write about and this alone has saved him.

The extend of truth in Kuklinski's story isn't really verified but if it is true, he certainly is a unique and fascinating character and I think worth reading about. If you are into true crime Kuklinski's story is a must but maybe the tv shows will be a better source of material (though I've only seen one of them).

Summary: from author of 053803 Great story but...
Comment: I really enjoyed the varied demise of his victims, but after being incarcerated myself with quite a few muderers as friends I question more than a few of his stories. As a professional, you just get the job done and don't bother with the details. As someone obsessed with killing you are too engrossed in the process to be usefull to the mob. But it is an enjoyable read. I've recommended it to a few friends.
