Editorial Review:
The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent First Book Comment: What is interesting about this book is the unusual world this story is set in. It really drew me in with it's take on the vampyre myth and wiccan culture. I had gotten it from the library and read it in one day.
Zoey is a fascinating character, and there are several moments in her inner monologue that had me laughing out loud. She goes from being ignored and misunderstood in her human life to finding a place she fit in and friends in her new Vampyre life. She has magic, a special bond with her Cherokee heritage, and finds a cool new boyfriend. She has the kind of life all of us wish we could find. I absouluetly loved reading this book and losing myself in her voice.
The book deals with certain situations all teenagers face, from drinking and drugs to emerging sexuality. It had a realistic point of view while not going too far to sound pompous and unbelievable.
With that said, there were only a couple of things that felt off from the book, and that's why I didn't give it five stars. First, Eric as a boyfriend wasn't as strong as he should have or could have been. I hope in the sequel he grows more and becomes an asset to Zoey instead of just decoration. Second, how the Vampyres "know" things were slightly off. In one part they seem to have eyes in the back of their heads, but then they can't figure out the scheming and power hungry bad girl, Aphrodite.
This book was very satisfying and I would definitely give it a chance, especially if you are a fan of such stories like "Twilight", "Vamprie Academy", "Evernight", and even "Harry Potter". Customer Rating: Summary: OK Comment: It was an alright book nothing special I decided 2 stop with this first book in the series didn't feel like wasting my money on the other books when I knew I didn't like the first one that much. Customer Rating: Summary: Eased the loss of Twilight Comment: I was so disappointed when I finished the Twilight series...I wanted MORE! LOL! Amazon suggested this book when I purchased Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, so I ordered it. These are very cute books...good for tweens...maybe a little more appropriate that Twilight...not as intense. PC and Kristen Cast are wonderful authors and I have odered the rest of the series... Customer Rating: Summary: Good Follow up book Comment: This was an excellent follow up book to the Twilight Saga. I had just got done reading all the Twilight books and was looking for something else that was just as good. Though I do not think this was just as good as those books, it was a nice transition. The only thing that I did not like about the book was the over abundant sarcasm that was used. Some is good, but this had a little too much for me. Still a great book! Customer Rating: Summary: Great Start to the Series Comment: Just finished reading this book. I've been reading other Vamp books (aka Twilight and Vampire Academy). This books is NOT as good as those but it's definitely a great start to the series. I enjoyed that it didn't end on some major cliff hanger and call me crazy, but I enjoy a happy (or at least not tragic) ending which is what this book appears to have. It was definitely enough to get me to go out and buy the second book in this series. The only problem I had was how juvinile they sometimes make the main character Zoey out to be...when I was sixteen I wasn't still using words like poo-poo mouth, it made her seem six instead of sixteen. However, I do think the author is building a solid foundation for the characters and it made me want to keep going with the series.
