Editorial Review:
Mention the name Bill Phillips to any of the people he's helped transform and you will see their faces light up with appreciation and respect. These people include:

  • Hundreds of thousands of men and women who read his magazine for guidance and straightforward information about exercise, nutrition, and living with strength.

  • Elite professional athletes–among them John Elway, Karl Malone, Mike Piazza, and Terrell Davis–who have turned to Phillips for clear-cut information to enhance their energy and performance.

  • People once plagued by obesity, alcoholism, and life-threatening ailments who accepted a personal challenge from Bill Phillips and, with his help, have regained control of their bodies and their lives.

When you begin to apply the information in this book, you will be proving to yourself that astounding changes are within your grasp too. And, you will discover Body-for-LIFE is much more than a book about physical fitness–it's a gateway to a new and better life–a life of rewarding and fulfilling moments, perhaps more spectacular than you've ever dared to dream before.

Within 12 weeks, you too are going to know -- not believe, but know -–that the transformation you've created with your body is merely an example of the power you have to transform everything else in your world.

In language that is vivid and down-to-earth, Bill Phillips guides you, step by step, through the integrated Body-for-LIFE Program, which reveals:

  • How to lose fat and increase your strength by exercising less, not more;

  • How to tap into an endless source of energy by living with the Power MindsetTM;

  • How to create more time for everything meaningful in your life;

  • How to trade hours of aerobics for minutes of weight training–with dramatic results;

  • How to make continual progress by using the High-Point TechniqueTM;

  • How to feed your muscles while starving fat with the Eating-for-LIFE MethodTM;

  • How thousands of ordinary people have now become extraordinary and how you can, too;

  • How to gain control of your body and life, once and for all.

The principles of the Body-for-LIFE Program are surprisingly simple but remarkably powerful. So allow yourself to experience the force of the information in this book–allow yourself to take your mind, your body, your life to a higher point than you may have ever dreamed you could. All in as little as 12 weeks.

Bill Phillips had been publishing bodybuilding magazines and marketing nutritional supplements for years when he had a weird revelation at a trade show: many of the most loyal and enthusiastic readers he had were totally out of shape. From that uncomfortable realization came his popular Physique Transformation Contest (top prize that first year: Phillips's own Lamborghini), now world famous, and this book.

The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you've spent any time in the gym, you've already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time.

Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts "carbohydrates" and "vegetables" into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Despite this strangeness, Body for Life still motivates because so many others have achieved astounding results in similar 12-week windows, and the pictures and testimonials are here as evidence. --Lou Schuler

Summary: A solid approach to weight loss
Comment: Bill Phillips a one time supplement company owner, and magazine publisher wrote Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength in the mid 1990s. Phillips, a long time bodybuilder who published a bodybuilding magazine and owned a supplement company, wanted to bring a bodybuilding program to the masses.

The eating program recommends eating six small meals a day, consisting of a balance between lean proteins, and "good" carbs throughout the day. This is done to rev up your metabolism by eating throughout the day, and also curbs hunger by never being without food. The exercise portion involves working out six days a week alternating between high intensity cardio and weight lifting. The focus of his exercise regimen is high intensity, Phillips recommends interval training over long distance runnning, and short reps at high intensity for weight training.

Most controversial to this diet are the dramatic before and after photos of the participants who have entered Phillips' weight loss challenge. They show what many believe to be impossible transformations in an alleged 12 week period.

Pros

Solid Plan: At the end of the day the program recommends a simple philosophy; eat right and exercise. There's no doubt that working out six days a week and eating a balanced diet of lean healthy foods will make you leaner and healthier.

Cons

False Expectations: The real trap with this diet is the false expectations it might invoke with some of it's users. My assertion is not that the before and after pictures are fake, but that it's likely the people who took them were at one time in great shape before in their life. Muscle memory is a very real thing, and it's much easier for someone who was once in shape to get back in shape, then it is for someone who never was in shape to get there.

Bottom Line

While Phillips has his heart in the right place, he seems to encourage an all or nothing mentality to weight loss. All in all though, this is a very solid and sensible approach to weight loss...if a bit regimented.

Summary: May work but not healthy
Comment: Let me preface this review by saying I have read the book and I tried the program for about 1 week but that's it.

I think this program would work for many people if their goal is short term fat loss and/or muscle gain. However I have done extensive research into health and the role of foods in good nutrition and long term health and this sort of a fad program based on a fair amout of processed foods (such as myoplex bars) is not the way to go. For optimal health and long term body fat management most research points towards a paleolithic-type diet as the most effective.

May be a good start for some but should not be viewed as a good long term solution.

Summary: Great Motivator
Comment: Great book, great exercises, great motivator. If you're not willing to work though, don't buy it. If you are ready for a life-changing body and mind makeover, you'll love this book!

Summary: It works
Comment: I saw a "blurb" about this program on the internet, and it piqued my interest. Always looking for a healthy way to lose and maintain my weight, I thought I would look further into it. Rented a book from the library, "Body for Life Champions" and that really got me interested. I decided to start working the program, without signing up for the challenge (challenges are done at different intervals throughout the year and if I wanted to enter, I would have had to wait until Feb). After working the program for about 2 weeks, I decided I would buy the book "Body for Life". I have been working the program now for about 6 weeks, and though I am not anal about following the eating pattern to a "t", I have been making great headway. Reading this book over and over has kept me motivated and moving. Not only does my body look better, I am full of energy and never feel like I'm missing out on eating (other diets I was always hungry). If there is anything I want during the week, I just say to myself, "I'll have it on my free day." By the time the free day comes along, I've forgotten or the "want" has passed. I would strongly suggest that anybody who is doing the yo-yo diet thing, try this program. It works if you stick with it!

Summary: Builds Mental and Physical Strength. Requires Financial Strength.
Comment: Great information. Written well. Very good logical help for getting fit, but requires home gym or gym membership. He also recommends that you buy his products for best results, which can get a little pricey. Overall much better than most fitness concepts. Recommend it.
